Since 2008

Eighteen years on Dickman Road.

A locally owned hardware store, U-Haul dealer, and small-engine shop run by people who live in Battle Creek and shop at the same stores you do.

Eighteen years on
Dickman Road.

Springfield Do It Center opened in 2008 in a converted warehouse on the west side of town. Back then it was mostly lumber and nails. Today we've got 67,000 SKUs, a paint desk, a rental yard, a small-engine shop, the biggest U-Haul lot in Battle Creek — and the same conversation at the bolt wall every Saturday morning.

We buy through the Do it Best cooperative because we're independent. We're not a chain and we're not owned by one. The couple at the register owns the building. The kid running the forklift is their kid's best friend from Lakeview.

What the neighborhood says

We eavesdrop. Occasionally we write it down.

I brought in a bolt from a 1987 John Deere. Dave opened a drawer, pulled out four of them, handed me a matching nut and a lock washer, and charged me forty-three cents.

I've rented U-Hauls from three different places in Battle Creek. Only place I keep going back to. Trucks are clean, the yard guy knows me by name, and if you return it ten minutes late they don't lose their mind.

Marlene matched a thirty-year-old stripe of paint off the garage door my dad painted. We took the piece of trim in. She smelled it, frowned, and came back with the right can.
