What we do (besides sell stuff)

Six reasons people drive past the big box.

We'd rather spend twenty minutes finding the right part than sell you the wrong one. That goes for the paint counter, the rental desk, and the repair bench.

  • Paint & Color Match

Match the swatch, the chip, or that square you cut out of the basement trim. Mixed on-site with the rest of the can on the shelf.

  • Tool & Equipment Rental

Carpet cleaners, tile saws, pressure washers, augers, sanders, concrete mixers. The tool you need once a year, not the one you buy and store in the garage.

Every aisle.
Every project.

We buy through the Do it Best co‑op, which means the shelves look like a regional chain. Everything else runs like the independent store it is: paint mixed by hand, lumber cut to length, fasteners sold by the each, and someone at the counter who actually knows where it lives.

The thing Home Depot can't find

The Bolt Wall.

Bring the old screw. Bring a photo of the hole. Bring the weird washer that fell off the snowblower last winter. Someone here — usually Dave, sometimes Marlene — will pull open a drawer, hold up the match, and say “that'll be eleven cents.”

Fourteen hundred labeled drawers. Imperial and metric. Wood screws, machine screws, lag bolts, carriage bolts, sheet metal, self-tapping, deck, concrete, masonry, drywall. Stainless, galvanized, brass. Nuts, washers, anchors, hooks, eye bolts, turnbuckles.

If we don't have it, we'll tell you where to find it. Usually at the other end of the aisle.

Ask Dave where it is

Since 2008 · Battle Creek, MI

Eighteen years on
Dickman Road.

Springfield Do It Center opened in 2008 in a converted warehouse on the west side of town. Back then it was mostly lumber and nails. Today we've got 67,000 SKUs, a paint desk, a rental yard, a small-engine shop, the biggest U-Haul lot in Battle Creek — and the same conversation at the bolt wall every Saturday morning.

We buy through the Do it Best cooperative because we're independent. We're not a chain and we're not owned by one. The couple at the register owns the building. The kid running the forklift is their kid's best friend from Lakeview.

What the neighborhood says

We eavesdrop. Occasionally we write it down.

I brought in a bolt from a 1987 John Deere. Dave opened a drawer, pulled out four of them, handed me a matching nut and a lock washer, and charged me forty-three cents.
Janine K. Pennfield · Saturday regular
I've rented U-Hauls from three different places in Battle Creek. Only place I keep going back to. Trucks are clean, the yard guy knows me by name, and if you return it ten minutes late they don't lose their mind.
Eric M. Harper Creek · Moved twice last year
Marlene matched a thirty-year-old stripe of paint off the garage door my dad painted. We took the piece of trim in. She smelled it, frowned, and came back with the right can.
